Day 1    Synonyms and Paraphrases

What are synonyms? 甚麼是同義詞 ?

Synonyms are the words that share similar meanings and can be used interchangeably.

同義詞是指一些有相近意思的生字，它們可相互對調來使用。

What are paraphrases? 甚麼是釋義,意譯 ?

Paraphrases are the phrases that are saying the same thing but in different ways.

釋義，意譯是透過不同手法來表達相同意思的短語。

Why do we use synonyms and paraphrases? 為什麼我們要用同義詞或釋義 ?

We use them for two reasons:

1. to avoid repetition 用來避免重複

2. to make clear the meaning of an unfamiliar word or technical term. 用來解釋清楚一些不常用的字或專門的詞語。

EXAMPLE

Extreme sports like rock climbing and mountain-biking are getting more popular each day. However, these dangerous but exciting activities can also threaten our lives. Many young people die in accidents resulting from doing this kind of risky sports.

- The underlined phrase these dangerous but exciting activities is a paraphrase of extreme sports. It avoided repeating the same

   phrase twice in the paragraph, while it also helped explain to the readers what it means by extreme sports 被劃了底線的字句

   是對方的釋義。使用了這個 技巧便避免了把相同的句子重複地寫兩次，同時，它能幫助讀者更易明白甚麼才

   是 extreme sports. 

- The words dangerous and risky are synonyms(同義詞), words with similar meaning (相近的意思).

You should note that:

- Synonyms and paraphrases can often be found between commas (,) or after a dash (-)同義詞或釋義一般都可以在逗號或破折

   號中找到。

- Synonyms and paraphrases are often introduced by such expressions as 同義詞或釋義經常會由以下的句式介紹出來 : or, in

   other words, that is, which means, which is also called, and also known as.
