Day 3: PHRASAL VERBS: keep and take

 

keep at: not give up (堅持做下去)

e.g. You should keep at your studies.

keep away: prevent access (不接近;使離開)

e.g. Keep the kids away from the cookies.

keep back: maintain a safe distance (保持距離)

e.g. Keep grandma back from the pool. I don’t want her to get drown.

keep off: prevent from climbing or stepping on something (讓開;不讓接近)

e.g. Keep the cat off the sofa!

keep on: continue (不停地…)

e.g. He kept on talking after everyone told him to shut up

keep out: prevent from entering (不讓進入;阻止)

e.g. The family keeps the dog out of the kitchen when they are not at home.

keep up: continue (繼續努力)

e.g. You are doing a great job. Keep it up!

 

take after: resemble a parent or relative (;...相似)

e.g. I think I take after my father’s appearance and strength

take away: remove, seize or capture (帶走;拿走)

e.g. The soldiers took the captives away.

take back: retract something (收回)

e.g. What you have just said is totally untrue! I demand you to take it back!

take down: write down what is said (寫下;記下)

e.g. Take the messages down for me please.

take for: consider; view as (認為)

e.g. Do you take me for a stupid person?

take in: learning (學習,吸收)

e.g. Are you taking all of these phrasal verbs in?

take off: leave (離開)

e.g. We took off after dinner.

take on: accept responsibilities (承擔)

e.g. She has taken on too much responsibility in this project.

take over: take control of (接管)

e.g. His son will take over the company if the father dies.

take up(1): begin a new hobby (開始一種新的興趣)

e.g. I am taking tennis up as my wife wants me to do more exercises.

take up(2): occupy space (佔用空間)

e.g. The coffee table takes up too much space in the sitting room.
