Day 3: Correlative Conjunctions相關連接詞

Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words that link two parts of a sentence (words, phrases and clauses) together. This form of conjunction uses ordinary conjunctions in pairs. 有些連接詞與其他字結合來形成所謂的相關連接詞。它們總是成雙成對。

Frequently used correlative conjunctions 常用相關連接詞

both … and

either … or

neither … nor

as … as

whether …or

not only … but also

The words, phrases or clauses that are linked together must be grammatically parallel. 相關連接詞兩邊所連接的元素 (字、短句或子句) 文法關係必須對稱

e.g. 1. Both subject and subject ……..

Both you and I like sleeping.

 “I” and “you” are both first person pronouns.

e.g. 2. …….either subject or subject.

I do not like either cake or ice-cream.

“cake” and “ ice-cream” are both nouns.

e.g. 3. ……..neither subject nor subject.

I know neither Latin nor German.

“Latin” and “German” are both nouns.

If you are connecting two words, remember the part of speech of the two words has to be the same.

若連接兩個生字時，緊記它們的詞類必須相同。

e.g. My dream table has to be either colourful or beautiful.

colourful and beautiful are both adjectives.

If you are connecting two verbs, the two have to be in the same tense.　若連接的兩個字是動詞時，則要再注意兩個動詞的時態是否一樣。

I neither sang nor swam.

 “sing” and “swim” are both used in the past tense.

When the sentence is in both … and structure, the corresponding verb has to be plural. 當我們用both … and這組相關連接詞時，緊記句中的動詞應該用複數的動詞。

e.g.  Both humans and dogs are mammals.
