Day 2: Comparative and Superlative (One- syllable)

 

1.       Q: What can we do if we want to compare the degree of the adjectives?

A: You can use comparative form and superlative form.

Formation of Comparative and superlative

 

1). Most one- syllable adjectives form their comparative by adding er and  the superlative by adding “estto the positive form:

 

e.g.:

2). By ending “r” and “st” to the positive when it ends in “e”:

 

e.g.:

3). If the positive ends in y preceded by a consonant, the  y may have to change to i before  adding “er” and “est” when they are in their comparative and superlative form:

4). If the positive ends in one consonant preceded by a vowel, the final consonant is doubled and “er” and “est” are added:

2.       Q: How to construct a sentence with comparisons?

A: With the comparative we use than:

 

e.g. Kelvin is stronger than Alex.

 

Comparison of three or more people/ things is expressed by the superlative with the… in/ of:

 

Stephen is the oldest son in his family.

 

3.       Q: What if I want to describe two things/ person are of the same quality to each other?

A: You can use the phrase as… as

 

    e.g. Joseph is as handsome as Steve.

          (Adjective in positive form)
